"The IRS will never contact you by phone or email." Scammers are using stolen personal information from employers and tax preparers to conduct fraudulent schemes involving false tax returns and refund theft.
Criminals infiltrate databases to obtain financial data, then file fraudulent returns requesting refunds directed to unauthorized accounts. When victims receive unexpected funds, scammers impersonate IRS agents or collection agencies, threatening legal action and demanding wire transfers.
